Electronic Monitoring Systems have evolved to integrate location tracking

Traditionnally when we speak of "Electronic Monitoring" - might be for historical reasons - we're thinking of "Tagging". However nowadays and specially since GPS Selected Availability has been discontinued (May, 2000), Electronic Monitoring Systems now incorporate location tracking technology and cellular communications technology.

In modern Electronic Monitoring Systems (EMS) the location of who or what is being monitored or tracked is usually reported to a control centre for further processing allowing a end user to plot that location on a map and eventually take corrective actions.

Considering its benefits it's not surprising to observe that Electronic Monitoring Systems applications comprise fleet management whereby the location of each vehicle of the fleet is monitored, vehicle tracking so whenever a vehicle is stolen its location can be immediately reported, asset tracking, etc. It's also present in 911 applications such as in personal security, employer tracking, lone worker protection, patient care, elderly care and child monitoring allowing a rapid response in case of emergency.
